What is an AAC file? What's the difference between AAC, MP3, MPEG and WAV files?

I noticed that some CD players mention these technologies. What are they and which are more efficient at coding data (music) in the smallest amount of bits?

aac,mp3 and wav are audio files and mpeg is a video format. Mp3's are what i use they are the better quality vs wav but i am not sure about aac i know apple uses that in itunes
