A lot of dogs sleep a lot.
Is there anything else health wise that is going on? Has he always slept this much? Is he eating more or less food? Is he gaining weight? Is his skin flaky and dry? Does his coat look good?
Your best bet would be to talk to your vet about it rather than getting advice from strangers off of the Internet. The vet can take a blood test to make sure everything is normal. Dogs can have thyroid problems and other issues that tend to make them less active.
Or he could just be fine and that is how he is.

OK...First of all....just b/c he doesn't LOOK sick doesn't mean he's not!! When was the last time he was at the vet?
Secondly...he could just be a lazy dog!
Third...Perhaps you are not giving him adequate exercises to get his system going....Try taking him for walks each day to get him perked up...
Fourth...My pup will lay down at my feet when I am sitting..He will also get up and follow me to the kitchen if that's where I go. When I do the dishes the lays at my feet (after begging to be played with)
If his health has checked out OK then I wouldn't worry about it..If you want him to have more energy get him on good quality dog food and start walking him daily....
Good luck

what do you mean by 'rare breed'? (your link doesnt work)
if you look on AKC.org at the Dachshund standards .. if it is anything BUT those .. you just had a back yard breeder rip you off to sell it for more money.
Does your dachshund look like this?
http://www.cwhatch.com/hatchfarms/double_dapple_dachshund5.jpg
Thats called "double dapple" and is VERY dangerous. Most breeders dont even attempt to get that pattern because dogs can come out blind/deaf and have no eyes. I have seen double dapple dachshunds who had one undeveloped eye or were deaf/blind. It's very sad.
Or is he this pattern?
http://image26.webshots.com/27/4/85/59/310148559oWlyhZ_fs.jpg
That is what my dachshund girl looks like. She is a "black and tan dapple" .. thats not rare, its just not alot of people usually have that pattern.
But anyways, I have a dachshund and she sleeps alot but yet she is still a puppy. I would try changing his food (gradually) to something healthier (to like Blue Buffalo, Cannidae or Innova). And try to get him out for a walk everyday or play fetch in the yard.
Have some healthier treats for him and stuff. Try to get excited when its time to go for a walk. I'm sure he will eventually not be a couch potatoe!
Good luck!

To answer your question, some daschunds are more like Garfield than dogs, they sleep a LOT, unlessd they get overweight, there's not actually a problem with that, we've had a few daschies do that, vet OK'ed it cause other times they were active.

most dogs sleep most the time. when you walk around the house they usually get up and follow you around and then when you get to where you are going, they flop to the floor and get alittle more shut eye. dogs are great. actually, they are the best. take your dog to the vet if you think thier is anything wrong. does he feel hot like he has a fever? that will make them really sleepy. any doubts call a vet

try buying chew toys if your concerned about his sleeping. This will help to keep him awake. It also depends on his age. If he is an older dog then this is normal. But if he is younger try my suggestion. By the way I have volunteered with animals and I know a vet so yea.

My mom has ten dachshunds and they sleep alot too. As long as he's not a lil pup, then this is normal.

how old is he? if he is an older dog, or even middle-aged, quite normal. he only exists to be around you. you should make sure he gets plenty of exercise and stimulation, playing, etc.
