Everyone always says "god gives you free will" "god is fair and doesn't force anyone to believe" "you can choose to deny him and go to hell"...etc. etc.
I would have no problem believing in something who made itself known. If the Christian god is so almighty and deserving, why does he insist on playing hide and seek? This god should be here, today, in the modern world, making his presence known (hugging people, answering prayers in person, preaching, etc.) if he is so great. He shouldn't instigate honest skepticism. If he truly WANTED people to believe in him, he wouldn't make himself so obscure.
And don't answer with "god is here if you seek him you will find him!" That just goes along with what I am saying. You shouldn't HAVE to SEEK god.
Disclaimer: I am a happy atheist (former Christian), so don't try talking me into your religion. I am here because I am fascinated with peoples' reasoning behind their faith.

Laptop Jesus - thank you for your insightful contribution.
Gary - I am convinced that there is no god, and none of your muttering will change that. I don't think you understood my post.

PhD - You misunderstood part of my post. I am an atheist because I am convinced there is no supernatural anything. However, I post questions like these because I find it fascinating that others seem to so easily maintain faith in something that is so [in my opinion] obscure, questionable, and improbable. The human mind is what fascinates me, not the so-called possibility of the supernatural.

I am glad personally you don't have to be in a Religion to be spiritual. I myself am not a christian, never have been, although I have gone to many churches, and studied multiple religions. I happen to be a Pagan. I'm a polytheist. I am not Atheist. I believe in multiple Deities. I don't think they are all Good or bad or equally power full or involved. some are much more involved than others. My opinion. and my experience. The Judaic God - The Father of the Pre-christian sect Is the most Vile example of any of the Gods I have ever come across. He is cruel Ruthless Selfish Jealous murderous and on and on. Then He tells us He is love. That is not the kind of love i want. That is not to say the Christian Ideal espoused by the Jesus guy isn't pleasant. Best PR guy his dad ever had. Now I would like to ask if your Actually Atheist or Agnostic. An agnostic believes in something but says they have no idea what it is. I couldn't be an Atheist Because honestly , To simply Be dead- end of story, cease to exist scares the shitola out of me more than finding out the Christians are right and I got to go to hell. But then, I'd rather go to hell than any version of their Heaven they ever presented to me, and after all Eternity is a long time to plot revenge :)
Joe.

If you have ever studied or read the bible you would know that God ruled differently in different dispensations(time periods). He deals differently with people now than he did back in BC. Then, he actually communicated with people but now you just have to have faith. It's not his decision to have you believe in him it's yours. Have you ever wondered what it would even be like if God came here? Do you know how many people would'nt believe him then either? There are a lot of people pretending to be "God". Anyway, saying that you are a former Christian, have you ever read the book revelations? That explains everything that will happen and unfortunately, it doesn't say anything about God coming down to earth before Satin convinces as many people that he is God. Hopefully, when that occurance happens you wont fall into the trap. By the way if you don't want to read it watch "Left Behind" it explains most of it. Remember...seeing isn't believing...believing is seeing

If you were happy as an atheist, you wouldn't question yourself with such frustration. As an "atheist" who is happy the question of God is null and void in your life so accept it. God is not the bad ruler in your life, that seems to be coming from you. I do agree with you that christians have little conception of all Jesus said and did, for if they followed his doctrines, first of all they would not refer to themselves with a term which came out of ANTI- yezuites. Not the DISCIPLES and APOSTLES of Yezua (Jesus). The christian faith came out of "two" empires, Greek and Roman. This faith was "not" of the doctrines of Jesus or else you would see ancient script written in the native tongue of the "original" apostles and not fraudulent "fakes." Their language was Aramaic, not greek or hebrew. All christians have ever had to do is CARE to look at the deceptions of the past to find TRUTH...........

If God wanted to be a ruler, he'd be competing with the devil's yardstick and that is no measure of His Wisdom nor His Love.
Many people fail to get to first base with God because to love, and to keep a relationship with God you must be silent.
You must be docile and listening to His Wisdom, not telling him, but accepting your humble condition compared to the one who gives you everything. So there is a prayerful attitude of reverence as well as a perserverence. I would not try to be so smart that I miss the love of someone so Profound, so Good and so Faithful.

I do.
Dont get me wrong, i do believe in a creator but i strongly believe that religion is a dangerous and man made way of controlling people.
I struggle to see how the creator who is suppose to love us would sit and judge us or set us up to fail and spend eternity in hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do believe that God ( however you percieve him or her) is of love and light and we are meant to be the same.
I would urge others to move away from Religion and towards Spirituality. Use your own judgement from your own experiences to decide how to live your life. Its our God given gift!!!!!!!!!!

If you are so happy then why do you feel the need to insult anyone's faith. It is not for us humans to bid God to do or refrain from doing anything.
Lucky for you belief in God or a Higher Being is not compulsory nor is it illegal. Should you not be content with that?

I don't think that you are alone in your assessment. There are quite a few things that don't make sense to me about this particular deity. But I won't go into them since this isn't the place to voice an opinion without anybody getting upset or defensive about things.

"God" left here a long time ago. If you were all powerful would you stick around here? I think not. "He" bailed and you'll just have to catch "Him" later. Kind of like a bad landlord.

If you want to know for sure if god exist then you should kill your self and see where you go after you die. If Christianity is right, then you are screwed, but if it is wrong then you have nothing to lose.
