Pitbulls can be very sweet and loving. In their play they can be a bit rough because they don't realize their own strength. There are a lot of pitbull haters and pitbull lovers who have answered your question. I worked in an animal shelter. I will tell you this: there is a reason that pitbulls are on the top ten list of breeds most reported for biting incidents. That reason is they are one of the top ten breeds that bite somebody. Sometimes they bite because they feel threatened, sometimes they have been trained to be mean, and sometimes they have owners who chain them up with no exercise for months and a time and when they get loose they just go a little wild. The main problem with pitbulls though is that getting bit by a pitbull and getting bit by say a pomeranian are two completely different things. It is ingrained in a pit (trained to or not) to bite and hold on. There jaws are so powerful that once the clamp on they will shake what they are biting to cause more damage and the instinct to hold on is so great that you can beat them half to death to get them to let go and they still won't let go even to protect themseleves. The threat of their natural abilities and seeing the result of thier natural abilities has made me personally decide to never own a pitbull. Even if they are nice and sweet tempered the possibilty of them biting and the damage they can do makes it not worth the risk.

People think all pit bulls are these aggressive and dangerous dogs. But this is only because the majority of pit bull owners are neglectful and only have the dog chained to a fence or in their yard for the presence and protection. Little to no socialization is done and the dog gets almost no exercise. What else can the dog do but become aggressive? With that in mind, you cannot train any dog (pit bull even more so) with all hugs and kisses. You must assert yourself as the pack leader and make yourself the dominant one, this is the only way your dog will respect and obey you. If you socialize your dog with other dogs and introduce her with your Pomeranian in the proper way they will be fine. Although you will have to keep an eye on them for a while until you know that you can trust the two together alone. Good luck!

I have a 1 year old pit bull and two cats. I rescued my pit bull from an animal shelter, but whoever had her before me socialized her very well, as she loves dogs, cats, kids, and adults. She is VERY gentle with the kitties, they are best friends. But even though she is gentle, I NEVER leave them alone together, only because my pit bull is very strong, I would not want anything to happen if for whatever reason they got in a fight (And I can assure you, my cats would be the one who picked the fight). My suggestion would be to get your puppy enrolled in obedience classes. This will help train her, and also socialize her with the other puppies. You will want your puppy to meet as many new dogs and people as you can, and always make it a positive experience. And when they pomeranian comes, they should get along fine, But I still wouldn't leave them alone together unsupervised just incase they have a 'disagreement' the pit bull could very seriously hurt the pomeranian. I hope this helps. Good Luck, they should be fine as long as you show your pup how to get along with other dogs from a young age.
My friend has a pit bull and a chihuahua. They love each other, but both were raised with love, well trained, and well socialized from an early age. And even though they are best buds, she still doesn't leave them alone together. They are crated seprately if she ever has to leave the house.

Pitbulls have ferocious temperaments, so I guess you could say it's in their blood to be fierce and if you leave them alone together, even if your pit has been trained to perfection, any small altercation between them might lead to serious injury or even death for the pomeranian. I suggest since you already have the pit, that once you get the pomeranian to keep them in separate rooms if you ever leave them alone. I have 3 extremely large dogs including quite possibly the most vicious doberman pinscher you will ever see but even I would be cautious with them if I ever got a pitbull, for their own safety.

Just watch how the two dogs get along. If one is trying to dominate the other, you need to nip that in the bud. The dogs need to know they aren't in control of each other, and that you and your boyfriend are the leaders. Once they establish this, there shouldn't be any competition. If you allow them to escalate their bad behavior, if any, then it will just get worse and someone will get hurt.
You and your boyfriend are owners of a very powerful breed, and you need to be aware that these dogs can and do inflict alot of injury. Meaning a bite from a pitbull is alot worse than other dogs. The rumors you hear of them born killers are false, it's just people are afraid of them. But you do not want to leave your dog alone with another dog, until you are CERTAIN he/she isn't dog aggressive. Dog aggressiveness comes from having a bad experience, not born with it. Just remember to be a RESPONSIBLE PITBULL OWNER, otherwise if you aren't careful and watchful, something might happen and almost always, it will be your fault because you own a "dangerous breed".
I own a pitbull, her name is Emily. She is great with other dogs and kids. There was an incident at the beach where this border collie mix was following us. I was throwing sticks out in the water for Emily to retrieve, but everytime she swam up to shore, the Collie would take the stick from her mouth and prance around with it, teasing her. Emily didn't know what to do and after while, she growled at him. He got the message and left. But now Emily is protective of her sticks, and toys if another dog comes near it, she will growl and show her teeth, but I repremand her and she ignores them and they go away. I blame myself for this, because I should have stopped the other dog from teasing her in the first place. I love her so much, she is like my child and I wouldn't want any other dog.

Please please read the page from this link. As a 2 pitbull 1 french bulldog household, it is full of must have info!
Dogs are like people; Some hit it off and some just aren’t meant to be together. When choosing a new pit bull for your existing dog, be prepared to look at numerous dogs and let your current pet give you his or her opinion. It's best to shop for a mature dog rather than a puppy. Dog social pups can change and develop dog aggression as they mature, shifting household dynamics in painful ways. But adults will give you a much better read on their limits with other dogs and how the overall chemistry between your pets will work out for years to come. Rescue groups that foster dogs at home with other pets can be a great resource for well socialized prospects. Stick with opposite sex pairings: There are examples of same sex pairs that do well together, but generally speaking, boy/girl matches stand a MUCH better chance of succeeding long term.

If you socialize that dog EVERY day, I think you could probably leave it alone with a rabbit and it would be the most gentile thing ever.
BUT, being a dog, she will make mistakes (like humans) and you better get her socialized, especially with other dogs, and the pom if possible, soon. Pitbulls, even well bred, were originally for dogfighting, as you know. My aussie was bred for herding and can still nip at heels...
Granted, I love pit bulls, and I don't want the rep soiled even more. just don't leave them in the same room unattended for long periods of time.
Also remember thare are hundreds of thoudands of pit bulls in the U.S. and one attack a month is not really that awful for dogs normally trained to either attack or not trained at all...also remember thet pits are not at all human agressive, but unless socialized, have a possibility of being dog agressive.

You should never leave a pitbull and a small dog alone. The small dog will not be able to defend itself from the pit. The pit might be "just playing" but their power and strength could hurt the smaller dog. And yes they do make good companion dogs if you train them well and make it apparent that you are the leader and not the dog.

yes,a pitbull is just like any other dog. if you raise it nice,it will be nice, and if you raise it to be mean it will be mean. pitbulls just get hella media for attacks and **** but any breed will attack if raised to do so.
but as for the pit and pom alone....definately let them get to know each other and become friends or w/e lol and work your way up to leaving them alone... ie-once the get to know and like each other, start off by leaving the room just for a few minutes, then step outside for a while, next being gone about 10-15 mintues...next an hour....so on and so on until you are certain they well be fine.
and... f*** reputations....just b/c ppl thing pits are gonna be vicious or w/e doesnt mean they will be...you just have to raise them right. pitbulls are definately the sweetest and best breed of dogs i've ever known. ((prolly one of the only dogs i'll ever get...lol&im kinda scared of dogs sometimes-def. not pitbulls like so many people are!!!))

All dogs are animal, pit bulls included. Not matter how you train your pit bull, it is still possible that it may attack you. What some people fail to understand is that this is true of any dog you own.
NO DOG BITES UNTIL IT BITES FOR THE FIRST TIME!
Pit bulls are not any more likely to attack you as any other dog. The problem lies in the fact that pit bulls have very powerful bites, and can easily (for example) shake a child to death upon which it has a tight grip.
