As long as it is not liquid it is not a problem to bring snacks on an airplane. If you are traveling internationally you would want eat or dispose of any fruits, vegetables, or meats prior to going through customs.

You can certainly check with the airline or check out the airline website or the newspapers have recently printed full lists of not allowed items if you check archives online.
As far as I know tho', if you carry on a small bag, like a gym bag for example, with a favorite book or magazine and you want to bring a few of your favorite snacks I think you are well within your rights. Put the foods in ziplock bags, or make the purchase of presealed packages.
The rules have changed for certain, but the last trip I took was international in 2002 and I took 2 bottles of water, (why wait for the cart, right?) as well as snack crackers and a few other things in ziplocks with me in my carry-on bag. If it's a short trip many companies don't offer food anymore, some don't even offer peanuts just to cut costs. so if that's an issue with you for health reasons call the airline, get yourself a doctor note (just in case), and have a safe trip.

If traveling within the US, yes, but after you go through security, then stock up of your munchies, just make sure you have enough water. Best bet, fruit, sodium will cause your body to swell inflight.
International travel - same thing, fruit like clementines, apple slices, carrots, instant oatmeal - they can give you hot water for it. And make sure to take bottled water with you, they don't give much inflight.

Like on an airplane, in carry-on baggage?
I'm not sure about fruit, but I always take a box of Wheat Thins with me and have never had a problem.
