I'm just adding a vote for the optical zoom. fhotoace has give the most information.
Face shots - optical zoom - equivalent of around 85-105 is classic.
Macro lens - used for close-up picture of eyes or teeth, but not for the whole face.
Then again, I use my macro lens for face shots all the time. It's a fixed focal length of 60 mm (not a zoom), so it gives the equivalent of a 90 mm lens when used on my Nikon cameras. This is a perfect length for face shots. I got the idea that you are talking about a point and shoot camera, though.

Use optical zoom will give you the best results, macro lens is good for taking still and close objects.
Now fujifilm digital come with face detection technology that can detect up to 10 faces at a time.

A macro lens is what they use to take pictures of bugs and flowers up close to increase the size and detail. If your taking pictures of people a macro wouldn't be the lens. Just use a zoom lens.

the macro lens and a short focus distance.
although the optical zoom will come in handy if you don't want to be all up in people's face while you are taking pictures of their pores.
Basically, the macro lens will make it to where you can take super close up pictures and have the closeup in focus.

use macro lens when it is 1 - 3 feet distance from your lens. optical zoom is for a long distance (above 3 feet).

Macro functions are provided to shoot photos from short distances.
Zoom is suited to make nearer distant images.
With Macro you can't focus to two meters, for example.
With Zoom you can't focus a closeup.
I'd rather check for a best Macro camera.
I wish you most beautiful photos.
