Its funny you ask that question because just 2 weeks ago I was asking the same question to a few people who are in N.A. Being (why do they call it a disease when its something you choose? You dont have a choice with Parkansins etc.) My boyfriend is in the program and this is what one of his friends said......... Its not a disease until it becomes an addiction and your life is unmanagable.... Apparently its quoted by doctors as being a disease as well.. I still have a hard time with it being a disease because you chose it>.. who knows..

Yes, it is initially a choice. And some people who do it won't get addicted....BUT the majority of people do become addicted because they are chemically altered by the drug and they may have a history of chemical dependence in their family. There is more and more research being done linking addiction with genetics...much like heart disease or diabetes can be linked in families. So, in that sense, it is a disease. I would tell you to go out and try it and then tell me if you think it's a disease or not, but that probably wouldn't end very well.

It's a matter of terminology. Drug dependence isn't a diseasee like leukemia or diabetes, it is a type of behavioral disorder.
It may start out as a choice, but when somebody won't get up in the morning without a drink, spends all of his money on alcohol, and doesn't even eat food or have any interest in anything but drinking; you might as well call it diseas. If it's not a disease, well, it's pretty close.

I would agree with u on that, but remember some people get really into drugs or alcoholism, some do not have the power to or will to handle problems or situations as others, and this, yes, will get them to get addicted so deep that they cant get out, and this becomes a disease for them.
thank you

It is a choice, but it is very closely related to depression, and people tend to try and self medicate themselves. And just like depression is somewhat of a disease, I guess you could say that addictions are too. No one is saying that they are good, but you are prone to some things through genetics.

I believe that it's been proved that alcoholism is hereditary, so that makes it a disease, I guess.
As for drug addiction, I can't believe that it's a disease. I've been addicted before, and it's a matter of willpower to overcome it. I had a lot of help and great support from family and friends, which helped me to quit.

Nope. My ex still blames me for his sudden increase of alcohol consumption. He decided on his own to drink more. No one talked him into it or forced him to.
