Basic differences are few:

1) For us, the Pope is just the Bishop of Rome. Great man, great Bishop - the "First Amongst Equals", even. The See of Peter - no doubt! But - the head of the whole Catholic Church? Nope. We share this position with our Brothers in Eastern Orthodoxy.

2) We both honor the Apostolic Succession, we both have Seven Sacraments, believe in the Real Presence of ICXC in the Holy Eucharist, celebrate daily Mass....but we do not say that the "recent additions" to the faith (Papal infallibility, the Immaculate Conception, the unmarried Priesthood) MUST be believed. We can hold them as good and pious opinions, but - not to the detriment of some body's soul.

3) That married Priesthood is a biggie. I would not be a Priest if celibacy was the only option. I think a lot of good men miss out on genuine vocations because of that rule, which was not in force, by the way, until the 12th century.

Hope that helped.

Blessed Passiontide!

The differnce is Anglicans are protestants. They reject all authority and teachings of Rome post the schizm. They have their own episcopal conference which is not in communion with either the Catholic Church or the Orthodox Church. The reject all teachings and practices after the schizm all doctrines post middle ages. They say they are Catholic but officially broke communion with the Church when the King of England expelled all Catholic clergy and siezed the Catholic land. The head of their church in England is the Queen, in American they run off Bishops conferences like all other protestant denominations.

We say they do have the power of priesthood because that is granted by a Bishop ordained out of the line of Peter, and there were several Bishops who declared alliegence to the King over the Pope so they had the right to ordain Priests. They try to present themselves as Catholic (big c Catholic means Catholic Church) they may be catholic(little c catholic means universal) but they are not Catholic. In reality their theology and structure are Protestant. Take a look at the Methodist Church and it is similar after all the Methodists broke of the Anglicans too. Although the Methodist worship services have changes and they do not believe Communion is the body and blood.

But technically this American Angelican Church is a break off of the English Anglican Church and has only really existed since 1977 as a group itself. Which makes them wholly Protestant.

There are many thological and doctrinal differences.

"recent additions" to the faith *rolls eyes* almost as bad as Mel Gibson, another Schizmatic.

"basic differences are few".......Basic Differences are many.

PS before anyone jumps on my back schizmatic is not a deragatory term but really the correct word for religious break offs.

I am terribly sorry if this is inappropriate to answer. I do not attend a Catholic church, but I would be proud to call myself a Catholic Christian. The word "Catholic" means "Universal." As such all Christians can be called Catholic. However, I did attend an Anglican Church for quite a while, so I hope that I am not offending you.

The Anglican Church is just another name for the Church of England that broke away from the Roman Catholic Church under Henry VII. In doing so, they severed all ties to the Roman Catholic Church. In fact, because of this, the Church as a whole is usually considered to be a branch of the Protestant Church. It has been said that an Anglican church service looks a lot like a Catholic mass, but the theology is closer to the Protestants.

Anglicans reject the authority and infallibility of the pope. They decided to break away and start their own church with their own pope (the first was Henry VIII, then Elizabeth)
