I've heard a lot of answers to this question. It's fasinated me for years. The ideas that make the most sense to me are:
- We were founded by religious fanatics. So that tradition carries on.
- We were removed enough from Europe and their hundreds of years of religious wars, that we didn't learn their lessons about how too much religion is a dangerous thing.

Not all of us are, and a good portion of those who claim to be are either paying lip service or just haven't seriously considered it. As a wild guess, I'd say less than 50% take it seriously. That's just based on my own experience in the Bible Belt, where we obviously have a higher percentage. I also think that my generation, "Generation X," are an even lower percentage, so as time passes, the percentage of believers will drop. But from what I've seen, the generation succeeding mine will balance us out (shudder), and tip the scales back towards religiosity.

Americans are not remotely religious. There is the history of the Euros that came here and there is that heritage of puritan christianity. Modern day americans are capitalists. Capitalism has no space for religion. lol.

I'm an American, and I am an atheist. The problem is that until my own countrymen (and women) quit trying to find ways to convert me or force me into believing in their religion, our country will continue to ignore the bigger problems. You just can't change the hearts of people overnight. But don't fret, we'll come around sooner or later.

lol if you think americans are religious you are way off (sadly) of course they have their religion of money loving and sexual perversion and immorality like other countries...in fact America is just as immoral as any other country...it is not religious at all, sure there are Christains here, but I would not call this country Christian

Wow, you looked at a map of the world, with Israel, Iran, and India, and you picked America to base this question on?
