So, I was on Atkins for about 3 months and I have finally come to the realization that this is not a healthy and effective way to lose weight and KEEP it off. I was not excercising when I was on it. I decided about a week ago to discontinue that weight loss program and start getting active! I have started working out 4-5 days a week for about an hour a day. I joined a gym and signed up for a personal trainer today but I'm EXTREMELY concerned of packing weight back on after changing my eating habits so drastically. Does anyone know a safe, effective way to change my diet without gaining back a lot of weight. I know I will gain back some, I just don't want to gain tons. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!!

I used atkins for 6 months, lost 40 lbs, then started Weight Watchers. I've lost 10 more pounds. It's working. :)

Atkins is so bad for you I am so glad you figured it out! Eat, eat your veggies and your fruit and good whole healthy grains and lean meats. Like it said above calories are calories and you have to burn more than you take in to lose weight, but you want the weight you lose to be fat not muscle right? So don't watch the scale to hard. buy a tape measure. measure yourself to start and let say once a week thereafter. work out 3-4 hours a week at a moderate pace, weight or strength train 3 times a week. Drink plenty of water 8-10 8 oz glasses a day. Now as you work outyou probaly will gain a few pounds to start, but it is water and it will go away. Also as you start eating carbs again you may gain some water weight due to carbohydrates do exactly that they hydrate your muscles. It is a good thing don't worry about it. As long you eat a healthy balanced diet and are active it will come off. Not as quickly as it did not Atkins but it will stay off and that is what you want right?

They best source i have found for work out and nutrition information on the internet is http://www.shape.com..

good luck

Losing weight is a simple equation: if you burn more calories than you eat, the weight will come off. Start off by estimating how many calories you burn each day using the calorie calculator http://straighthealth.com/pages/tools/caloriecalclb.html This will give you an idea of how many calories to eat. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. To lose 1 pound per week you need to create a calorie deficit (burn more than you eat) of 500 calories per day. To lose 2 pounds a week, you have to double the deficit to 1000 calories per day. You can achieve this by eating less, exercising more or a combination of both.

Very good choice on your part.

I have had to give first aid to strangers on 5 separate occasions because they tried to workout while on the Atkins diet. I also know of one other who got the message when his urine came out black.

If you workout and eat properly, much of your regained weight will be the muscle mass that you lost. This will get your metabolism back up.

Eat 6 small but balanced meals per day. Your carbs should be high in fiber and your proteins should be lean. Fats should be sparing but concentrated in the omega 3's and omega 6's.

Lift weights because the slight increase in your lean mass will burn extra calories 24 hours per day. This will increase your resting metabolic rate.

Use a measuring tape instead of a scale to measure your progress because it is more accurate than the scale.

Here is a sample meal plan and a BMR calculator. When your trainer measures your weight and percentage body fat, simply input them in the appropriate fields and hit "Estimate".
It will estimate your lean mass and the caloric profile to maintain your lean mass without gaining extra weight.

Look into a 'Blood-type diet'. It dictates what types of foods you should be eating based on blood type. Its very interesting and IMO should be followed by anyone interested in attaning optimal physical and mental health....
