There is a person called the "most recent common ancestor" that's commonly nicknamed "Adam." National Geographic is doing a lot of work on tracing this back with DNA testing, and you can even join in the project to see where they think you come from based on certain markers in your DNA.

Much of that depends on what your religious beliefs are. If you are a creationist you could assume that all of our lineages trace back to Adam and Eve, making the answer to your question "YES".

I personally believe in Creationism, although I have created a belief that is my own. It is that the Bible never said Adam and Eve were the only humans God created. Therefore one could believe that there are more than one initial set of ancestors.

If you are an Evolutionist, then its safe to assume that there were many humans who all evolved, causing many different ancestors.
