Mine eats high quality dog food and anything else around the house that he can get his mouth on. His favorite was my sandals that I wore to take the dogs out. Notice I saw "was" because he has now completely destroyed them.

Okay, so instead of jotting down "children" for 2 points, I'll give you a well-thought out (and researched) opinion, fit for a project.
You can't buy a healthy food at the grocery store. You definately can't buy a good food at wal-mart. If it shows you a picture of a dog ans points to parts of the anatomy it benefits, it's probably purina, and to tell you the truth, I don't want to support a company who can make good food (like pro plan or One, which are better than most foods) and also makes Beneful.
OKAY, my opinion on Purina is done. Here's what you want. To find out what a GSD needs to eat, you first consider the indevidual dog...How old is he? Does he work or do sports? Are his owners away all day? Is he hyper? That will turn out calories, which is pretty slef-explanitory because it applies to humans, too. So you take that, and then you say to yourself "dogs run on calories. How many calories does this dog need?"
Then you pick a brand. And no, it's not a pick a brand, any brand! It's all about the ingredients. Look at Beneful. The first ingredient is corn...do you really WANT your dog to poop an extra CUP of corn for you? No! Would your dog rather eat a cup of corn, or half a cup of meat? MEAT! So find a product made primarily of meat (the majority of ingredients come before a fat on the ingredients list).
It really does not matter what you feed within one brand, because the difference in the formulas is REALLY small. The popular brands just make more formulas to make it look like your pet is really geting a tailored diet. So take whatever formula you wish, and add up calories to match the dog. Most backs of food do that for you, but it has a ten pound weight range, so do you really trust them? I don't.
EXTRAS! Did you know all a dog food needs to pass feeding trials is a hunk of vitamins? Isn't that pathetic?
If you want me to flat out give you names of high meat content foods, here's some:
Timber Wolf Organics
Eagle Pack
Innova
Canidae
Wellness
Solid Gold
Natural Balance
LOL sorry for such a long answer but I am really compassionate about this topic so if you have any more questions you can email me.

Look for a high quality (no by products), large breed formula. Royal Canin has a German Shepard specific food. It addresses certain G. Shepard issues such as soft stools, hip problems, digestive issues. You can learn more about it on their website. http://www.royalcanin.us/

They eat a good quality dog food to give them energy and strong bones. They are just like other dogs. They like bones for treats too.

Anything around the house. Inside and out. Mostly shoes and underwear.

Dog food, the same as any other dog! It comes in cans, bags, and foil pouches at pet and grocery stores.
