What is he comfortable in? At my wedding, my FIL wore a suit. it was the first time in 20 years that he got a new suit. (I was concerned. A few months before the wedding, I went to his aunt's funeral and he wore a shirt, blazer and khakis that looked older than me and I was 24 at the time.) Fortunately, my MIL made him get a new suit. (He didn't wear it again until my husband's brother's wedding last fall; Five years. He had to get another new shirt because the other one wasn't properly hung and got dirty.)
My father, a Lutheran pastor, performed the ceremony. We celebrated communion at our wedding and my father normally wears his clerical shirt and collar for communion services. He asked my mother and me before the wedding if he should wear a tie or his collar. I had suggested that he wear his collar for church/the wedding and then quick change after. I told him that the other pastor (who was the pastor at the church my husband was working at at the time) would be wearing a collar, but he wore his on a daily basis. My dad wound up wearing a tie. My dad also wore a tux to my brother's wedding (they divorced) and was uncomfortabl the whole day.
Also, if your fiance's father already has a suit, or even if he has to buy one, that's more practical than shelling out $100+ for an outfit he's not ony going to wear once, but has to return with no money back.
Besides, in five years, it won't matter as much.

He wore a tux. He did wear a bow tie instead of the regular tie that the groom and groomsemen wore to separate him a bit.

A tux, his vest and tie should be different from that of the groom and groomsman.
My fiance is wearing white vest/tie to match me
The groomsman are wearing pool to match the bridesmaids
My father and his are wearing platinum tie/vests

You need to wear a tux. Depending on the time and social level of the event, you can decide 'what' kid of tux you need. You also need to coordinate with the bridal party if it's your daughter getting married.

Depends on the event. For my wedding, my father, my fiance's father, and my fiance's grandfather (my grandfathers are dead), are all wearing tuxes. But, it's a formal wedding, too.
