My son was very early and has eight hemangiomas. All the professionals say it is just one of those things and he most likely would have had them anyway. Maybe so but I have my own veiws.

His first one showed up on his lip right where the ventilater tubing was pressing down.
Other ones started showing up after alot of pressure was exerted. He has a large one on the inside of his elbow which was the exact size and shape of the sats probe, it was not there before they sited the probe and when they went to change position a couple of hours later it was there.
He has quite a large one on his cheek. This was where his ng tube was stuck to his face. the nurse pulled the tape off with such force his little head came up off the bed.

This is just my opinion but i would be interested to hear if any other preemie moms think the same.

No one knows what causes hemangiomas, but very low birth weight premature babies do have them more frequently than full term babies.

There has been speculation that they are somehow related to placental cells, as hemangioma cells are similar. There has been some research on this, and some is ongoing. You can take a look at the Vascular Birthmark Foundation website, www.birthmark.org, for more information.

The cause is still unknown but remember seeing the doctor who is the leading researcher on them say that the cells in hemangiomas are very similar to a certain kind of cell in the body, I forgot which cell.
Most of the time Hemangiomas shrink on their own. Hopefully her's does.
