We aren't having a rehearsal, so the grooms cake will have to go on same table as wedding cake.

So would it look funny if I made and decorated it myself?

Or should I have it professionally made?

I don't know why you are worried about a rehearsal and the grooms cake. Usually, the grooms cake is served at the reception on a table separate from the main Wedding cake.

You can do any sort of Groom's cake you want.

You can put it anywhere you want, theres no "rule".

I have seen many grooms cakes on same table as wedding cake.

They don't need to be fancy like the wedding cake, people understand its something you wanted to do for him yourself.

A bride is usually really busy the last few days before the wedding, the fact that she would take the time to do it herself is even more meaningful than a bakery made cake IMO

So I'd say make it and decorate yourself!

You don't need a groom's cake at all... after all the wedding cake is not the 'bride's cake'!

But if you want one, get something totally different from the wedding cake.. gives people a choice in flavours! Basically you have free rein to do what you like on this cake since it's just an 'extra' for fun!

Our grooms cake was a replica of our cake, but in chocolate buttercreme instead of white. We were going to do a cheese cake because that is his favorite, but we didn't want to buy too many. We served our grooms cake at the wedding, and we had a rehearsal.

I think that it depends on the budget and your tastes. If you are having a formal wedding that you are spending $30 grand on, cheesey cupcakes like boy scouts would be a bad idea. But, professionally made ones that go with him and his theme would be nice.

You typically serve the groom's cake at the reception and its on a different table than the wedding cake. We're doing cheesecake b/c we both love cheesecake and I'm not a big fan of cake so I don't even care about the wedding cake.

You can make it and decorate it yourself if you want. If you're having over 50 people it might be alot of work though. The best thing about a groom's cake is that there are no rules! It is supposed to fit his personality.

grooms cakes are to be fun. making it your self would be a nice touch. i wish i had the time to make one for my wedding! our grooms cake is a little over the top on details so there is no way i could do it. i have to have a bakery make ours.

it's whatever he likes/ wants. his favorite flavor and something that reflects his personality.
ie:
golf fan- golf ball cake
formal guy- top hat
smoker- cigar cake
if you can do something that will fit him, I think it would be a sweet gift from you to him. but if there will be a lot of people, you may want to outsource the job (either to a professional bakery or another family member).
happy baking!
