Hi :) I guess it depends what kind of small dog you want.
For a small dog I like boston terriers, they are very smart, protective and I think adorable. They are not as small as poms or yorkies though- is that the size you are looking for?
I also think pugs are cute, like the kind in Men in Black :)
Shih Tzus are also cute, cuddly and smart- more long haired though...
Letsee... dauchsaunds- I personally LOVE the long haired ones :) they are very pretty and sweet. Also very protective!
Lastly malteses- they are pretty but rememeber maintinance for the long hair.
If all else fails and you want a short haired cutiepie what about chihuahuas? They also come in a long haired breed if my memory serves me correctly.
Hope this helps a little :)

Hmmm.. You start out wanting a sib, shepherd, but don't want one that is that big, and end up wanting something that is smaller.. You should stick to medium sized breeds. You are mentioning purebreds, so you are not thinking about going to the shelter?! Could rescue a nice medium sized breed dog, and save a life..
A friend of ours has a Karelian Bear Dog. Very cute, very nice guy. Lots of energy. Probably too much for a first time dogowner tho.
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/karelianbeardog.htm
I like the German Pinscher when it comes to smaller dogs, but you would need to be a strong dog owner, and know how to set rules.
I love the look of the Beauceron, but it would be far too much dog for you...
Could check out the Belgian Malinois
http://www.akc.org/breeds/belgian_malinois/index.cfm
You know what... You should go thru the breeds and decide exactly what You like and what you want, and take into consideration how much time you have for training, how much company you get, you get alot of small kid coming around, you travel alot etc.....
It's easy to say Labrador, or Golden, but they regular dogs... There are a whole lot of cool dogs out there, alot of different breeds bred for different jobs. You need to decide what you like, what you want and what you plan to do with the dog.

Okay, I'm going to get alot of thumbs down for this, but i think the best dog for you is a mini. Australian Shepherd, (i know i know-there's no such thing ext. ext. ext.!!) But i say if you adopt that what is the problem??
Okay, they are really great dogs, they are smaller then the big ones but have the same personalities, the same characteristics, the same big hearts, and the same colors/ patterns! here is a website: its called MARS, its an association for lost, abandon, and stray/homeless dogs!
http://www.miniaussierescue.org/
These dogs need a home badly, and the type of puppy from above, seems to fit this description, they are loving, cute, and ohh so sweet, and these ones need a second chance!!!
i hope this helps :) for more info on Miny Aussies, go to....
http://www.mascaonline.org/
please consider these dogs as an option, good luck- and congrats to any puppy you get :)

Ok, well there are lots of little doggies that are cute in animal shelters. Why dont you and your parents go to the shelter, look at the dogs they have and possibly adopt one. If you dont see one there at that time, try looking at
www.petfinder.com
for a little dog. I would look into getting a terrier mix dog. Yorke's and poms might not be the best kind of dogs to get, if you are going to be getting a big dog in the summer. You should look into a dog that is probably 20-30 pounds, just so it will hopefully get along with your big dog.

An Alaskan Klee Kai -- they look like Siberian Huskies, but they are much smaller, with adults anywhere from 7 - 20lbs (depending on if you get a toy, miniature, or standard size). Do a Google search on the breed and you'll find lots of info. Klee Kai love their human families, and are good with kids. They like to stay clean, and will only need a bath about twice a year. They do require weekly brushing. Klee Kais are good at self-feeding, without overeating, so you can usually just leave dry food for them all day. They are expensive, though, and you will need to get on a breeder's wait list. So now would be a good time to get on a wait list, if you are planning on getting a puppy later. (You didn't want any commentary on cuteness, but I tell you, these dogs are stunningly attractive.)

I just got a small breed dog for my family. He is a mixed breed pug/boston terrier. I have done a lot of research on both breeds and not only are they cute but easy to train, they love to please their owner, and they love to play, long walks, hiking, and cuddling. bostons don't bark unless someone knocks on the door or if he is really hyper. I would suggest either one of these breed or a mix like mine we call him a bug. I'm kinda partial to bostons they are a little easier to groom, pugs can have skin problems, but if you get either one of these breeds be aware that they snore loudly when sleeping. Good luck and I hope I could help a little bit.

I have a bichon/pom mix & I love him. He is so smart. From the pom's & yorkies I have been around, (I groomed dogs), I tend to notice that the poms seem to be more social & less timid than the yorkies. Both are fragile breeds & can be prone to problems. As long as you are gentle & socialize, either could be a possibility. My vote would be pom, even though they seem to be more vocale than the yorkies. They also don't require quite as much grooming as the yorkies, although both need to be brushed regularly.

I think that a mini dachshund is right for u. by the way you described your family & crap like that i know you need an e-z 2 train, small, energetic dog.that would be the exact description of a dachshund. dachshunds r very smart, e-z 2 take care of dogs. & about the cat. u need 2 introduce them at a young age & supervise them when they play at first. 4 the 1st 5 or 6 times they play, you need 2 b the reffery & make sure that it doesn't get 2 rough. Good luck!) MAKE SURE IT IS A SHORTHAIRED MINI DACHSHUND IF U GET 1!!!

If you want to get a puppy, you have to be really invovled with it on order to keep it in good shape, and healty. If you want a big dog, but not too small, "I recogmend a golden retriever, but those require alot of time for exercise and stuff.
Good Luck, Kaylee
