I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, automatic transmission, and on the handle to change from park to rev. or drive, theres a button on the side, it says "O/D", if I press it, on the dashboard, under the speedometer, it says in red "O/D off". What does the button do? Is it good?

ok......whats over-drive mean? Uses more gas for highways? Uses less? More power?

The O/D button allows the transmission to shift into overdrive, or to lock it out of overdrive (overdrive off). Overdrive allows the engine to operate at lower RPMs while cruising increasing gas mileage. Overdrive should not be used while towing, mountainous driving where the transmission is constantly shifting back and forth, and should also be avoided when using 4WD.

If the O/D is Off you will spend more in Fuel cost The ONLY times to turn it off is when
1> Off Roading
2> Long Steep Hills
3> Towing Any thing heavier than 500lbs(You Might leave it on if very flat terrain but if an incline turn off).

You Can Also Check Your Owners Manual Too.
This Feature is there to save burning the bands out of your transmission Use it Properly it'll save you $$$$.

Over drive will save gas on flat highways. Don't use it on inclines or you will lose power . Don't tow any thing in overdrive. Overdrive means your engine is turning less RPM's through the transmission gearing to the wheels and is designed to improve gas mileage.

Ok, to make it simple, OD is overdrive, meaning that when the button is engaged, (no light), it will shift into the fourth gear instead of staying in third gear. You always want the OD button with the light off unless you are towing a heavy load. Dont listen to people telling you to turn it off in city driving, all it does when you turn it off is lock it out of fourth gear. Good luck with your jeep!!

It engages your "over drive"! You can turn it off for city driving and then engage it for the open highway- usually over 50mph!
