The sugar substitute used in sodas are considered toxic to the body. Let's look at splenda, nobody tells you that Splenda has chlorine. There hasn't been a single long tern study on the safety of splenda and the few short term studies done where done by splenda themselves. FDA determined that as much as 27% of sucralose (Splenda) can be absorbed by the body. This is particularly alarming for a chemical substance containing chlorine. Clearly the makers of Splenda are not being entirely forthcoming about their product's influence in the body.
All sodas absorb the calcium in your blood and make your bones release more and more calcium. Listen to the people that tell you that 2 or 3 doesn't hurt you and get in line for osteoposis medication. Weight shouldn't be the worry, toxicity and osteoporosis should be the biggest worry. Drink Organic Sodas..."Whole foods" sales some good ones $2 a six pack. Coca-cola could make a much better product but decides not to and spend the money on comercials and marketing instead of giving us a better product. For example, the color of coke is from an 'artificial color', the color of the organic soda comes from caramel; which is more toxic, an artificial color or caramel? I know paint is more toxic. Coca-cola decides to paint Cokes. Which is better for you? white sugar or evaporated sugar cane juice? Well, white sugar is striped of all natural minerals and made to be sweeter, evaporated sugar cane juice has minerals found on the soil and beneficial to your health. Coke decides to use white sugar and spend all that money they save on commercials. Keep drinking your coke but supplement the calcium you loose in doing do. Coral Calcium is the best, it even has all of those minerals white sugar is stripped from.
Good luck...!!!!

Obviously it's not as healthy as drinking pure water, but a diet coke or two a day is not going to kill you as long as you are drinking plenty of water as well. The biggest downfall of the diet coke is the caffeine which acts a diuretic which can dehydrate you.
With that said, I love diet coke. I have 2-3 every day in addition to my water. I've dropped about 12% of my body fat over the last few months and I'm almost at my goal weight. If diet coke had a negative effect on weight loss, I doubt that I could have done this. Enjoy it, just do it in moderation and remember to drink your water too!

Many diet sodas contain the artificial sweetner aspartame. There has been controversy regarding its safety and the circumstances of its approval by the FDA.
Diet coke does contain caffeine and some experts believe although caffeine temporarily boosts metabolism it also makes one crave certain type of foods such as carbohydrates. However, IMO, drinking one can of diet coke a day will not hamper your efforts to lose weight.

Some people who diet guzzle tonnes of diet soda. Diet soda rots teeth due to its high acidity (it is very good as a toilet cleaner for the same reason.) and it contains artificial sweeteners which can trigger depression in some people and have other side effects. Why not drink herb/fruit tea, natural juice with sparkling mineral water? It is what i do.

It sounds like you have a slight addiction if you drink it everyday and it relaxes you. It will backfire your efforts in weight loss because Diet Coke contains high fructose corn syrup which messes up your metabolism(negatively). It also contains artificial sweeteners( sucrose...) . If you replace the pop with a tea (preferably Green tea) you would definitely see an improvement in your weight loss efforts and in your body's overall health.

Here's why. Diet coke doesn't make you gain weight but becuase it's sweet, it makes you crave sweet things like cookies, candy etc. SO although you might not be gaining weight from the diet coke, you might be gaining weight from the other sweet things.

It's artificially sweetened, your body wasn't designed to consume it, thus it tends to store toxins in fat cells. When fat cells are holding toxins, they hold onto the fat! The pH of any soda isn't healthy either.
