...if the subject of the afterlife comes up, and you smile and shrug and say "I'll find out when I get there?"

Why do people act like it's not okay to be calm about not knowing this? I don't have to claim that I know what Australia or Zimbabwe are going to be like, either--I've never been to either of those places. I have, at best, only educated guesses.

I guess what I'm saying is, I'm a little shocked that other people get so shocked, and I'd kind of like some insights.

Simply because you scare them. :-)

Seriously, because their own fear of mortality forces them to find solice in religion, etc. Defining the after life eases their worries and 'medicates' that fear. However, at the same time - they are still insecure.

I have also drawn similar reactions from people ...

I agree. I have a much better idea of what Zimbabwe is like than I do of the afterlife.

I agree with you

but you know , most people are religious because they want to know where they are going after death , or to feel that they have a choice about it , in this life

to ask some one this question , a rreligious man or woman , it's normal to get kinds of answers you get

heaven ... or .... hell
or any other place .. with any other name

for me , I'll know when I get there :)

have a nice day

Because some people don't like the fact that fact don't agree with what they believe in which they 'DEFINITELY' know is right. It is pure ignorance. I agree with what your saying. I'll just have to wait until I die.

I like your approach... the only ones who are shocked are the ones who are too afraid to admit they don't know for sure...

the people who ask you that are the type who feel earth is just a waiting room for heaven so they cant possibly fathom why other people wouldnt want to know for they've yet to understand your views.

P.S Atheists_are_dumb is just narrow minded so I personally wouldn't heed their advice.
