I recently asked a Senior Pastor the same question, and he said..

"Remember that verse in Colossians 3:15 'Let the peace of God rule in your heart.....' I have found that one of the most useful tools in the struggle to discern the will of God. I try and "follow the peace" and ask Him to use that deep down peace to indicate the direction I should move in. If I have the slightest disruption to that peace I ask Him either to restore it or I take it as an indication that I am not to make that move."

The Holy Spirit is the most misrepresented among the works of God. It is an evil deception to believe the Holy Spirit as aGhostly image that sends the messages of God or for Catholics to say that He is another person in One God. The Holy Spirit are the words of God that were put into the mouth of His chosen ones and chosen prophets and that do not include the apostles of Christ.
To connect with the Holy Spirit had already been established and the way to make it work on you is to constantly read the Holy Book. There is no other way but to read, learn and fully understand the words of God in the Old Book and live in those words so you may know that those are Holy Spirit of God printed in your hearts and mind if you take each word sincerely and seriously. The Old Testament is as good as new. You only have to discern and understand what applies better to the modern world and what should be considered as part of the past may be your learning process. It will only be rendered obsolete when the words of God remains in your heart and mind and you no longer need to read it. In the future, the New Testament will written in the hearts and minds of the people and your brothers will no longer teach you to know thy God. The New Testament we have at present is not purely the works of God, it is just a memoirs of a chosen One who was once was, now is not and shall come back.

The more you pray or meditate the more cloesly you'll be connected with Holy Spirit. You can pray specifically for guidance in helping others, etc.

Don't necessarily expect to hear a voice tell you "change your job" but if you wake up and pray/meditate and feel 100% like yourself, like your true self, then you can be confident your instincts are right on.

A yes is a "no doubt about it, absolutely feeling" a no is anything other then that. Connect with God and connect with your true self. It feels good when you make the right deision. it feels uneasy, scarey, when not.

Just like anything else you practice, you will get better with time. Keep on praying and fasting. Try looking at how some of the folks in the Bible prayed. This might give you some fresh ideas to change up your conversation with God a little. Maybe pray scriptures too and just place a personal touch on a Psalm for example.

Also..is there something in your life you know is hindering your relationship with God? Is there something he wants you to do and you don't want to get out of your comfort zone? Maybe he is waiting patiently for you to make the next move. Trust and obey and God opens your eyes.

You wont know for a fact in any area that is not proven by scientific fact unless you completely believe in it. That is one thing you must do. Another thing is that you must do is listen to what some consider a sixth sense (concience/intuition). This is something that all people have whether they listen to it or not. The thing is, there is not always a black and white to what is right and wrong. That is when one must choose between the lesser of two evils or the greater of two rights. Finally, when one is to make a decision, that person must not only make some for himself/herself, but also for whoever else that decision might be affecting (hence why our country is in part democratic).

Hmm, I don't think it works that way. God gave you a brain to figure things out, so use it. Or borrow other expertise to get your problem(s) solved. Prayer works, but don't wait for the Lord to hand you life on a platter. Even a Calvinist will give you free will in this area.

the best way to hear the holy spirit in your life is to study God's word. he will then be able to better train you in the spiritual gift of discernment. this will help you to know what to do in certain situations. it will become second nature. however, none of us are perfect, and always follow the divine direction he gives us.

I once heard someone say they asked God which parking place to choose.

Perhaps if there is a god he/she is not involved in directing the minutiae of any single persons life. You do have free will you know.

You need to know yourself and be comfortable with that knowledge. Open your eyes, expose yourself to new things, ponder/meditate/pray

seek and you will find
