What are the components that all addictions have in common? People can be addicted to so many things. Food for example, food and cocaine are two totally different things, but someone can be addicted to both of them. Can you tell me was makes an addiction different an extreme obsession.

An addiction is something that you want to stop but you "can't." Either you haven't figured out how (because they CAN be stopped) or it is a physical addiction. I was an addict for 5 years. I was bulimic. I was addicted to the process of it...I used it to avoid my life. I wasn't addicted physically to food or anything but I was addicted to the relief that purging gave me. Sick, I know. It was so difficult to go on everyday. I wanted so bad to quit but I just didn't know how. I couldn't see myself functioning normally. I think that any repeated behavior can actually change chemicals in our brain to where we feel like we need to keep doing something. Addiction can be physical, mental, emotional, or a combination of all of them..which makes it even more idfficult. Food is probably an emotional/mental thing..but we can't live without it..which makes breaking the addiction of overreating that much harder. You don't need cocaine physically to survive..so you can totally cut that out if you are addicted. An extreme obsession..generally is something that we like or want to do and don't want to stop. An addiction we want to stop but can't or don't know how.

Genetics over 80% of addicts have a significant family history. All addictions release Dopamine in our brains. This is the reenforcing mechanism of addiction. Dopamine makes us 'feel good'. Drugs can also release other brain chemicals but this is the big one for additiction. Obsessions are more thought involved and result from anxiety based reasons. Addiction is getting used to a 'high'.

You can get over an obsession but an addiction is for life. It controls your very actions and thoughts. I say I am addicted to chocolate but in reality it is just something I really like. I can stop eating it if I have to and sometimes I just dont have the desire for it. With an addiction the desire for it is always there. You have to be able to control it for life so it doesnt control you.
