Judas. like the other apostles (and the only Judean along with the 11 Galilleans), had a preconceived idea of what the messiah would be like and thus failed at many times to understand the teachings of Jesus ... at least until after the crucifixion and resurrection. It may be that Judas had decided that Jesus was not the "anointed one" of Israel as part of his decision to betray him and he would not have considered this an overreaction but more an act of patriotism. It is apparent that after the arrest and crucifixion, he felt much guilt and remorse and committed suicide. Of course, the way you have phrased the question leads me to guess that you believe Judas was correct in his initial assumption. Good luck in your search. Grace and peace.

You have the story a little backwards. Quite a bit of the gospels is around the disciples learning that Jesus was the Messiah and nothing says they found out he was not, though we know some still had doubts at that point. Even so...that was not why Judas betrayed him now was it. Judas appears to have been frightened...fear...the ultimate factor.

Judas knew that Jesus was the Messiah. He turned his back on Him because he was Greedy! He turned Jesus in, in exchange for a small amount of money. When everything was finally done and said, the guilt and the agony overpowered Judas and he committed suicide.

If you read the Bible you will find that Judas didn't betray Jesus because he found out Jesus wasn't the Messiah.

Judas expected Jesus to Reign as King on earth, he was looking for the people to be saved right then.

As soon as satan entered Judas he betrayed Jesus.
(Read Luke 22)

Jesus knew Judas would betray Him, it had to be to fulfill Scripture, "Even My close friend whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heal against Me."
(Psalm 41:9)

Judas decided that Jesus wasn't the messiah and that is why he turned him in so cheaply. It wasn't until after, that he realised that Jesus was the messiah and felt so guilty (help along by some demons) that he killed himself. Of course this is just according to the bible.
