haha, my second dog didnt do this, but my first did. Its just a way for them to become familiar with the person. From this they can tell if the other person owns a dog, what their territory is like and so on. This is a natural thing for ALL dogs unless they are trained, its just instinct.

Dogs sniff each others butts because they have pheromones coming out of that area that tells other dogs a lot of things. It can tell them if that dog is feeling nervous, if the dog is in heat, if the dog is stressed, things like that. That is very important to the dog sniffing, then they know if they should stay away or if they can be friendly with each other. They sniff our butts for the same reasons, to find out more about us, cause after all we are just big dogs!

ha ha, its how they say "hi" who are you and where have you been today? Its weird but when dogs sniff their own kinds rear ends they can tell all kinds of stuff like whether the female dog is in heat, what status the dog of either sex holds in its pack\family in the home (whether they are a dominant or submissive) I know amazingisn't it? I have 2 Rhodesian Ridgebacks in my home, big dogs weighing at 80 lbs and my puppy at 70ish and when I have company they greet everytime with a shoved up nose (or they try to as most people try and sometimes get away, and they just get a chase out of the dogs, lol) I have to apologize to newcomers whom aren't accustomed to it, but they quickly understand after some short explaining. Every dog of my breed I have met showed thse manners when I entered "their" home and I just learned to accept it with respect. Its simple. Just let hem do their butt sniffing thing if the want to. Its perfectly respectful canine manners.

it is how they identify you and so they will remember you next time. they also look for the scent of other animals on your lower bodies. i have heard that a dog can tell if a woman is on her period because it is similar to a ***** in heat. (but don't worry. they won't tell anyone)
