It is pronounced Doe-er-tee

I am positive of this due to my husband descending from Dougherty.

I am a Dougherty from eastern Pennsylvania. I went to a local catholic school where there were many Dougherty's...as common as Smith or Jones. Without exception we all pronounced our name Dockerty. All of our nick names were Doc at one time or another. I joined the army in the late 70's and no matter where I went, no one ever pronounced my name as I was taught to pronounce it by my father. And it was not as common a name as I once thought. And after a while, I just stopped correcting people and even answered to the name Doherty.

The explanations given for the "DO" pronunciation have nothing to do with the name. They are explanations from English class. In dough...the gh is silent. It is Ok for English but not Ok when pronouncing a person's name. The name is Irish...not English. Immigrants trying to fit in change the spelling to Dockerty if they want the ck sound or tolerate the mispronunciation as I did . After a few generations, wrong is right.

Years ago I watched an Irish film where one of the stars was Dougherty. He pronounced it Dockerty. I jumped up and said YES!!

Dougherty Pronunciation

I'm a Dougherty. It's pronounced differently all over the US. In the Philadelphia area where it's the highest percentage it's pronounced DOCK-ER-TEE. Down south it's typically pronounced DARR-EH-TEE. Then other places it's DOE-ER-TEE or DOW-ER-TEE.

Dougherty originates from Donegal County in Ireland where it's O'Daughertaigh. With the Irish pronunciation there sounds as if there is a 'ck' where the 'gh' is. So DOCK-ER-TEE is the original pronunciation as immigrants would have been pronouncing it over a hundred years ago. Over in England, Dougherty is spelled as it is pronounced as 'Docherty'.

I lived near to a family called Dougherty and their pronounciation was Dockerty ...

I also knew a family called Fenaughty... procounded Fen-norty, but they had cousins who prefered Fennity as the pronounciation

just depends on the people.
