See the Biblical account of the "Uproar at Ephesus."
Acts 19:23 At that time many people became very upset about the Way of Jesus. 24 There was a man named Demetrius who made things out of silver. He made silver models of the temple of the goddess Artemis. He brought in a lot of business for the other skilled workers. 25 One day he called them together. He also called others who were in the same kind of business. "Men," he said, "you know that we make good money from our work. 26 You have seen and heard what this fellow Paul is doing. He has talked to large numbers of people here in Ephesus. Almost everywhere in Asia Minor he has led people away from our gods. He says that the gods we make are not gods at all. 27 Our work is in danger of losing its good name. People's faith in the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be weakened. Now she is worshiped through all of Asia Minor and the whole world. But soon she will be robbed of her greatness."
28 When they heard this, they became very angry. They began shouting, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" 29 Soon people were making trouble in the whole city. They all rushed into the theater. They dragged Gaius and Aristarchus along with them. These two men had come with Paul from Macedonia. 30 Paul wanted to appear in front of the crowd. But the believers wouldn't let him. 31 Some of the officials in Asia Minor were friends of Paul. They sent him a message, begging him not to go into the theater.

This is kindof a silly question. Of course they worshipped their gods. They lived with them and believed in them as much if not more so than Christians believe in their god. They didn't have a Bible, their gods were their own, they talked with them. There were priests, and oracles, but the responsibility of worship and communing with the gods was on each individual. In no way were the Greco-Roman gods just an icon or image. They were real, personal, part of everyday life. Most families had personal gods in addiion to the Olympian gods we think of now.

Yes, they were worshipped. I think people misunderstand the culture due to the fact that philosophy came from the Greeks. They assume that all of the Greeks viewed the Gods as mere symbols of the human condition. But there were plenty who did worship them.
I believe the Greeks, their religious and philosophical ideas as well as the Romans political structure, gave us more than we think. =)

well, I'm guessing that back during ancient Roman and Greek times( about the same), people wanted answers for stuff, so they created gods and goddesses who did this and that according to their title. Like Bacchus(Greek) or Dionysus(Roman) the god of wine and fertility did crazy things as he was drunk and hung out with nymphs and what not. also, people wanted to worship and honor the gods, so they made beautiful buildings, such as the Parthenon, which was for the Athena. Does this parallel with what we have now? i guess in some ways than most.

They were worshipped. Have you ever been to a Roman temple? It's evident in the way the buildings are set up and what they've found in the pools surrounding the temples.

It's probably very similar to today, in that some of the people would have worshipped them and others not, and much like today there'd be those who claimed to worship and didn't.
So yes it does have definite parallels to what we have in society today.
