Some people use bobby pins and some people use velcro. Some people don't use any sort of attachment. There are yarmulkes that are relatively deep, and easy to keep on your head, and others that are very shallow.
The idea behind the hats ("yarmulke" in Yiddish, "kippa" in Hebrew, and skullcap in English) is to remind the person wearing them of the presense of God. Only men wear them. I'm don't know why- maybe girls don't need an external reminder of God.

Jews mainly use hairpins - a standard bobby pin - or a more complicated clip which clicks shut.

However recently it's been possible to buy a sort of velcro - just the hooks side, which you stick on to the underside of the kippa and it sticks onto your hair. It's obviously not as secure as real velcro but it works pretty well, especially if you've got wavy or curly hair which lots of Jews do.

Yep...the ones I've seen have kept them from falling off by using hairclips. They wear them because it shows they're in submission to G-d. Hope this helped=)
