Marie is a South Shore Girl. Me, I'm a North Shore snob so I'd recommend Northport, St. James, Setauket, Port Jefferson and Smithtown. The further West you go the more expensive because the commute to the City gets better. So, towns like Huntington, Manhasset and Great Neck would get pricey though you could look around Hicksville. On the Northfork, if you're not worried about distance to NYC there's Greenport and the surrounding towns. The SOuth Fork gets pricey because of the Hamptons, etc. If you want appartment living then Forest Hills is probably the nicest and most affordable town in Queens followed by areas further out like Bayside.

Basically, you have the entirety of Long Island, as well as all of Brooklyn and Queens between Montauk and Manhattan, so you have a lot of places to choose from!

If you want to be near the city, then obviously you should look at places in Brooklyn and Queens. You can find a small studio, or even a share for a decent price. The closer to the city you are, the more public transportation options there are, so that will help keep costs down as well.

If you are okay with being in a more suburban area, then there are plenty of nice towns in Nassau and Suffolk to choose from. However, living there you are going to have to pay for a car, as there is not a lot of public transportation out there. Most of Suffolk is going to be both expensive, and very limited access.

Cheapest and safest do not always go hand in hand...you might want to figure out your top budget and then look for places in that range in the safter areas.

Some nice towns: Bayside, Mineola, Jackson Heights, Sunnyside, Woodside, Mineola, Massapequa, New Hyde Park, Baldwin..

Wow, that covers a lot of territory. There are some good neighborhoods in Queens that aren't too pricey yet. On Long Island, many people rent out apartments in their homes. That's probably the cheapest way to go, but I don't know how great a situation that is, really.
