If you can tell me how to get rid of my beta and vhs tapes without polluting the environment, I might consider buying DVDs and a DVD player.

I use both, and I am also going to buy a USB turntable so that I can put all my old lp's onto CD or DVD.

I can't get rid of my VHS I have too many home videos on them, it would cost me a fortune to convert them all to DVD, and apparently DVD's only have a lifespan of 10 years, and then they start to degrade.

I use both.
I use DVDs to to record things I want to keep, because of the superior picture quality and the ability to skip quickly to specific tracks.
But I use VHS tape for things I probably only want to see once, because tapes are cheap and are easily erasable.

VHS? I still have a black and white television set. Why invest in new technology when the old stuff will do?

We use both--just bought "Little Miss Sunshine" on DVD last weekend--but I can't see myself ever transferring all my
VHS tapes to DVD; the cost would be prohibitive.
Good luck.
