I am looking at getting one with around 70K on it, and would like to know how they are for maintenance and what falls apart soon and what to expect.

Real good on reliability.. depends upon the year however... 97-99s had a habit of leaking coolant behind the water pump and locking the motors up or at least making a knocking noise after....
Later models are pretty good motors.. just upper intake gaskets (they are o-rings that leak air and turn on the MIL and no coolant passes near them as there are two seperate intake gaskets on this truck) and the DPFE sensor...
other than that maintaince.. and it's a 200k+ mile truck easy... I know many with 100k+ on them.. original motor .. basically those two things above..about it

that is a very good and stout little truck assuming it's a single cab in all. i used to work for the county were i live and we had alot of those from 96-02 and they were the better preforming and had alot of power. Way out lasted the chevys and dodges and those had v8s. the only thing was the 4.2 wasn't that great on fuel mileage. the only problems we had out of ordinary was the ball joints/tie rods tend to wear out faster then they should because for5d uses seal joints without grease fittings if they go out just install moog ones and they are grease able. other then that didn't see any real problems with them

Over all it sounds like a good truck but just be warned the 4.2 is not a very common motor and i can tell you that a replacement will be around 3,000 plus installation

They are alright. the 4.2 is the same Motor as the 3.8 found in the mustangs, just a little more displacement. I would Opt for the 4.6 V8 personally. you will be much happier you did.

We have thousands of them under our control. Very dependable vehicle. This combination has been Fords number one seller for years. There is a reason it has so many repeat buyers.

They are ok, not a dependable as the 4.6, but they are ok.
