amp is short for ampere it's the unit of electrical current. the number in front of it is the amount of electrical current, kind of like 1 or 2 gallons, etc. So something that's 5 amp = means it's 5 amperes or 5 electrical units

Amp is short for amperes - a unit of electric current.

The numbers give the rating or capacity of the circuit breaker. This helps size the circuit breaker for the load it will carry. If the current draw through the breaker exceeds the rating, the breaker will open.

There is also a company called AMP that manufactures electrical equipment including circuit breakers. The breakers also have a sticker with AMP to indicate they were make by this company.
