Is It Required To Preform Surgery During Medical School Or During Residency To Become A Doctor?

It is required that you rotate through surgery during medical school, but you won't be doing much (if any) of the actual operations. If you're lucky, you might get to put in a few stiches, hold retractors or put in the staples at the end of the procedure.

What you WILL do on your surgical rotation is H&P's, dressing changes, suture removal, daily rounds, checking lab work (aka scut work).

Medical students do not have the necessary skills to do anything meaningful in the OR. They are there to learn. A surgical residency is a minimum of 5 years. You can't expect to do much in the 3 months that you rotate through surgery.

Why Do You Capitalize Every Word? It Is A Lot Of Extra Work And Is Quite Distracting.

Depends on what you consider surgery. Any doctor can perform "basic" surgery such as giving a local and doing a stitch job on a minor wound or the emergency traych on a choking person. And yes, these are officially considered surgeries.

Many medical schools require minor surgical skills to pass some classes.

BTW, Hollywood isn't always the best source of law or medical advice.

When you take you clinical courses in the 4th year of medical school, you will have to rotate through surgery, obstetrics/gynecology and probably other surgical specialties. You most likely will have to assist on certain operations through those rotations. Most of the time, you're retracting the skin so that the surgeons can see the field and operate. You may be required to suture the site after the surgery is complete. You can probably opt out of the other surgical sub-specialties, but most US med school require you to rotate through at least general surgery and OB/GYN.

YES IT IS A REQUIREMENT.

Do not listen to what other have said. It is a requirement while you are still an intern, you might never do surgery again but while you're an intern you will AT LEAST learn the basics and maybe perform or help during surgery.
