A well balanced diet is what you aim for, so of course you want to avoid junk food. Depending on the type of cancer, there may be problems with food due to difficulty swallowing, chewing, etc. Generally, the problem is getting enough food into a person once they begin treatment. During treatment the patient should be encouraged to eat anything they think they can eat. Offer small amounts of a variety of foods, frequently. A few animal crackers here, a sandwich there.

I don't know of any cancer fighting type foods that are encouraged from a medical standpoint. We've all heard that beets and broccoli are good because of antioxidants but pushing foods the person isn't used to when they're going through treatment is probably not a good idea.

As above, antioxidants are very helpful, and there may be other things about plant foods that are helpful against cancer. Dean Ornish did a study recently on patients with early prostate cancer, where half the patients were assigned to a low-fat vegetarian diet and half ate a regular diet. The ones on the vegetarian diet did much better and their PSA's actually decreased. See the source below for more information about it.
