I am planning to build a deck with a roof covering. The size is about 10 x 14 ft. I don't require a permit if its build 6 ft away from the house or if it doesn't have a roof. The roof covering will be attached to the existing roof of the house. The permit cost is $212 and it will take 2-3 weeks for approval. The building inspector said that I may be penalized without any permit and its safer to build with a permit.

Any suggestions??

Get the permit! If the inspector finds out you added a roof then true, you will be penalized. Where I work, the fine is min $560 - 2,000 per day until the structure is removed or a permit is pulled. Remember, we don't make the rules we just enforce them.

Also, the Inspector will come out and inspect the roof cover to see if it's built to code.

Well I am confused about the question now.... The building inspector already knows you and that you have plans to build something on your home. Has already advised you that it needs a permit, and there will be fines.

Get the permit. If you know all of the requirements, you MIGHT get away without penalty if you start AFTER you have applied, but before receiving the actual permit. But I wouldn't of course suggest that - that's your call.

it is safer because u won't get fined. If he told u that u need it, i suggest u get it because if they catch u which could b years down the road when u go to sell, they can not only make u pay for the permit but also fine u per day that u didn't have one. ADD that up and i think u'll find it is not only safer, but cheaper in the long run

Yes!!! If a neighbor turns you in, your penalty will be a lot more then the permit. And you won't be able to sell your home later without it. Buyers won't be able to get a loan.
