Generally the passport is to ensure you can get back IN to the US!

The only places you can go without a passport now is Canada and Mexico and ONLY if you are travelling by ground transportation. If going by air a passport is required. Even travel to U.S. territories requires a passport....to get back in the U.S.

You can go to a few places in the Caribbean without a passport. They are Perto Rico, St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. You can obtain detailed information at this website http://readyforvacation.com

Canada or Mexico as long as you drive. There are lots of great places to go in the USA. Check out one of the National Parks.

Hawaii is not bad, but "outside the U.S." your only chance MIGHT be U.S. insular possessions, Costa Rica, Guam, Midway, U.S. Virgin Islands
