I've been put on the wait list and I'm writing to them expressing my desire to go to the college, how it's my first choice, etc. but how should I address the admissions director? Should I use "Dear Ms. Freeman,"...? That seems so... awkward to me. What other words/phrases can I use?

If you know the name, then use the name. Therefore, "Dear Ms Freeman" is fine. It only feels awkward because it's formal but a bit of formality never went astray in a college application letter. You won't offend anyone by referring to her as Ms Freeman; but you might if you called her Sally.

Unless you know that someone should be addressed as 'Dr' or you know that they prefer another title, then always call a man 'Mr' and a woman 'Ms'. Don't call a woman 'Mrs' or 'Miss' even if you know her marital status, unless you are SURE that's what she prefers (ie. she has signed her own letter as 'Mrs' or 'Miss').

The alternatives - "Dear Sir or Madam" or "To whom it may concern" - are only for when you don't know the person's name.

If you know the name of the person who will actually read the ltter, then you need to use their name: Dear Ms. Freeman.

If you don't, then you use their title: Dear Director of Admissions.

OK...you've spent enough time worrying about this - pick one of the above and focus on the letter itself!

Good luck to you!

Dear Ms. Freeman is correct. You are hoping to make a personal connection. You want her to put a face to your file... some means of her getting to know you and rooting for you to get in.

Let her know you're planning to go visit the college and would like to meet her if she has time.

Good Luck,
