#1 suggestion: STOP DRINKING SODA.
you'd really be amazed how much sugar there is in each can, and if you drink more than a can a day, you're really loading up.
100% Fruit juice is a slightly better alternative, because it's at least a natural sugar, but you should still dilute it half and half with water. And don't depend on fruit juice for your daily fruit servings, as they do not have the same concentration of vitamins and minerals and fiber that the actual fruit does.
After that, start reading your labels...remember that anything ending in 'ose' (fructose, glucose, sucrose, etc) is a sugar. Look for as little of those as possible, as well as other things like corn syrup.
And don't go to extremes right away...yes, eat lots of fruit like the other folks say, but it's OK to sometimes drizzle a little chocolate syrup on your strawberries. If you try to go cold turkey, you're far more likely to rebel against yourself and splurge in a moment of weakness. Just keep it as a special treat--like if you've made it all week with all fruit, no candy bars, low sugar jam, splenda in your coffee, etc...then have you a little something good.
Good luck, and good on ya for making such a healthy choice for yourself!

First, see your MD or go to your community free clinic and describe your craving for sugar. The Doctor will likely order a test called a Glucose Tolerance Test, or may order one of several other tests for your blood sugar level. Once he has the results of this test, he will then tell you how to proceed.
After this testing is done (changing your diet beforehand may interfere with the results), try eating bananas or pineapple when you crave sugar unless the Doctor tells you otherwise.

be careful with things like low fat ice cream, as it has lots more then normal ice cream. nutritional information on pakaging should help you, also ingrediant lists go from biggest to smallest amounts so if sugar is near the top of the list there is a lot of it. also sugar has many forms eg glucose, malt, lactose, fructose, surup, and more, some of these are naturally occuring in foods. dont stop eating sugar suddenly or you wont stop thinking about it, try eating berries for the sugar, this way you also get the vitamins.

Drinking hot unsweetened green tea keeps my mind off of sweets. I also eat green seedless grapes, pears, apples, strawberries, cherries, and I also like to make fruit smoothies. Some days I just feel like I have to have something sweet..so I treat myself to a cookie or 2. It's okay to cheat once in a while...just try to not to cheat everyday.
