That is alot of money to neuter a dog. Its usually alot less to have a male fixed then a female. Check with your local Humane Society about low cost neuturing they should be able to point you in the right direction.

That is WAY too much. We live an area with a much lower cost of living than Jersey, but I paid about $110 for a 70 lb dog.

Call your local humane society or search online for "free or reduced spay/neuter" to find low cost programs.

I agree with the other posters WAY TOO HIGH!!! I would check around for another vet, Period. If this vet is going to charge you that much for a neutering, what will they charge you for shots? Annual checkups? Emergency surgery? It should not cost as much as a human to care for a pet. Call your local animal shelter and ask if they can give you a list of vetrinarians in your area that work on sliding scales.

Sounds oddly high priced to me. On the other coast where I live, vets charge around $150 for a neutering and I thought that was ALOT!! WoW. I also know here that the SPCA has a spay and neutering programme for people that are "low-income" and its like $25 and pitbulls are free always.
Maybe try a different vet, comparison shop.

Hope this helps

I live in louisiana, and it cost around 100.00 here depending on the doctor. There is no way I would pay that amount. Did you try contacting the local shelter, some time they offer help with that. Also see if the big fix rig will be in your area, they off free spay, or low cost.

That is WAY too much money to pay for neutering a dog! A good price range for neutering a dog would be about 100$-250$.

That could be a bit much like other are saying on here. What they are charging for is what is involved with the whole process. Its not just a "snip and go thing." In the surgery, there is the prepping the dog, i.e. your vet will tell you to start the whole process by withholding all food and water after midnight the night before the surgery is to be the next day. Then they have to keep the dog at the vet for a few hours and observe it and see if they seem bright eyed, healthy all around, and showing no other obvious signs of being sick basically a prep check up. Then at surgery time, they have to put the dog under, shave the area if hair grows there, clean the area around with an anti-bacterial cleaner like alcohol, around and near the area to be snipped, then they actually use foreceps and twist the you know whats so the circulation basically cuts off. Its very similar to tail docking. I use to work at a vet and saw a few surgeries, and was amazed at what all happens. They are all very clean and neat, and routine procedures. Once the you know whats are numbed up and able to be removed, they remove them and sew the open area up with stitches, put the dog back in a kennel, then make sure they wake up from being under safe. (being under can have side effects like sometimes dogs sadly never wake up and basically die in their sleep). I don't know if you have ever seen or heard of what happens to a dog thats been under before and is waking up but they do tend to be a bit fatigued, totally unaware of their surroundings and can become aggressive or violent. They are thinking, Ok, I went to sleep on a cold metal table breathing this funny smellling gas, and now they are back in a cage? What the heack just happened here? I know funny huh? If only dogs could talk right? Anyways, when they start to wake up officially they flop around like the are having seizures sometimes while in their kennel and have to sometimes have a vet monitor them if they seem to be waking up and trashing around violently, and stay with then right by their kennel to make sure they don't hurt, or injure themselves while they flop around. Once they are fully awake they have to still be closly monitored to make sure the are ok to go home later on, and most vet clinics will keep the dog overnight so they can recouperate more before going home, therefore charging a boarding fee for a night. Thats what my vet did for my Female. She ended up having an allergic reaction to her stitches. The newer way the sew dogs up these days is by putting the stitches on the inside, reducing the chances of the dog licking or biting at the stitches. Had they let me take her home right after surgery I would have had to bring her right back because of it and possibly been charged. She was also put on a few pain meds one for itching and one for helping heal up the stitch site. This surgery is very risky as its an open wound on your dog whether it be a Male or Female. But the costs and risks greatly outweigh the health issues in the long run. As a result of all my Females complications, I will hopefully have her around a few more years past the age of 10-12 years which is the life expectancy of Rhodesian Ridgebacks and most big dogs. Oh by the way, in New Jersey I have found a few low-cost or free spay\neuter clinics for you to check out. I posted a link to thepage for you below. ;)

Way too much! I know of programs in Georgia that cost under $65. Ask your local pound or humane society, they usually know where the best place is.

Your full of it...If vets wanted that much,we would have cats and dogs living in the cracks and crannies of every building, street, ditch and river there are. There would be no room for us. Vets would be OUT of business at that price.
Think harder on the next question. At least make it believable.
