Lots of questions for you all today.

Ok. I assume Christians see adultry so wrong because of the commandment forbidding it. If you are an athiest, is adultry allowed?

Not being smart a**ed, just curious.

I don't see it as wrong because the Bible forbids it. There are many things the Bible forbids for solid secular reasons, and adultery is one of them. It's wrong because it is unethical to breach a contract, and immoral because it intentionally causes pain to someone to whom you owe a duty of protection. If you enter into a marital contract and don't keep it, there should be civil consequences and no-fault divorce should not be available in the case of marital breach like adultery. I've known a number of people who have contracted STDs, incurable ones, from unfaithful spouses. It's inexcusable and should be legally actionable.

You're spouse enters into a legal and social contract, in most all cases pledging fidelity. Breaking that pledge is as unethical as reneging on any other civil contract. If a spouse is unwilling to stand by the contract they agreed to, then they have an ethical duty to so inform the other party to the contract who has the right of renegotiation or nullification and should be generally entitled to monetary damages as would be the case in any other breach of civil contract.

Not sure I like the word "allowed". If someone is atheist, they don't follow any organized set of "rules" as relgious people do. It is a common misconception, however, that atheists lack morals. I am an atheist, and I see a lot wrong with adultery. It is inconsiderate, selfish, and hurtful. I don't need a book (let alone a "big guy in the sky") to tell me that.

Hell yeah, it's wrong on my standards! Just because I don't care for the bible or god or any of that, doesn't mean i don't have my own morals! I wouldn't like it if my husband (let's pretend I have one) cheated on me! And So, I don't plan on cheating on anyone, and I would and I would probably feel like dying if anyone cheated on me. And yes, I also agree with the whole "thou shalt not kill" thing. I may be an atheist, bu I still have a set of standards to live my life by! I try to treat others the way I want them to treat me. (Which can be hard at sometimes!)

No, it's against the law.

The Bible says that divorcing and marrying again is considered adultry, so I guess too many people would be committing adultry.

I am agnostic, not athiest, but in my opinion, you should wait until you find a person that you really do care about deeply, not just passing flings. It is still something special to give up your body, and your heart, and its not something to be taken lightly. I dont think its necessary to wait for marriage tho.

Adultry doesnt always mean that you cheated on someone...i took it here to mean sex outside of marriage. Cheating is wrong regardless of your religious point of view..

You seem to be making the mistake of presuming that civilizations take their concept of morality from religion. The bible is one of the most perverse sources for moral guidance that exist on this earth, completely self contradicting. In truth, civilization has guided it's own sense of morality by realizing the truths of which actions damage and which actions benefit communities.

No problem here. I am accountable to my wife. I promised her I would not, and she is real. If I do cheat though I can't just clasp my hands, pray to her and be magically forgiven.

Now there are some that do cheat and neither partner has a problem with it. No hocus pocus to tell them it is wrong and suddenly it isn't.

As the one being betrayed. Betrayal is pretty harsh. Atheist isn't about what you can get away with. Its about taking full responsibility for your actions and the outcomes that it causes. I think lying is wrong and saying you will be with someone not having the balls to tell them its over before you move on is petty.
The funny thing is you Christians even though you are sinner don't want to take your gods punishment for it (Hell). So you allow yourself to sin anyway, because you got your Christ check for payment into heaven, a heaven which you don't according to your belief deserve. Sounds to me like your letting someone else take responsibility.

Adultery is immoral because it is breaking a promise. If you are married, you have (presumably) promised your spouse to only have sex with each other. By having sex with someone else, you are breaking that promise, and thus lying.

If you're in a mutually open relationship, though, all bets are off :-D
