I wouldn't worry about it yet. Even for a child with no delays, 3 1/2 is not unheard of to not be trained yet. My son is speech delayed as well, and he just turned 4 last week - he's trained for peeing, we're still struggling with pooping. I have a lot of friends with kids with various delays... and to be honest most of us didn't worry/pull out the big guns until they were 5. That was always my timeline in my head for my son - if he's not fully trained by 5, I'd start talking to therapists.

But not sure if you feel it, but it was scary with my son's 4th birthday approaching... I don't know what it is about age 4, but you feel like it should be done by then. Oh, I wanted to mention I have a good friend who's daughter was "typical" and she did the same thing with peeing.... would hold it until she had bladder spasms even - and she was pushing 5.

Anyways, it'll click, try not to stress too much about it, just keep doing what you're doing and it'll happen... but to some up my long winded story, for me, I wouldn't be concerned until closer to 5, especially where she is speech delayed. Good luck!!

you can try what we did!
go to wal-mart and get her to pick out some big girl unerware(dora, princeses, sponge bob, whatever she likes) then throw away all the diapers and pullups. Get 2 potties, one for the bathroom and one for her room or play area so theres easy/fast access to the potty.
ask her/put her on the potty when ever you go to the potty and do not no matter how hard the first few days are go back to diapers. This is what we did and our daughter was completly dry both day and night in 2 weeks.

You have my sympathy...daughter going through same thing and decided to transfer care of her son to pediatrician. When she goes for that first appointment it is going to be funny because it is a behavior problem (the parents don't have the time) and second I don't think there is meds to get the process going...The child will not go to the potty at all and he is almost four years old. His older brother is still in a diaper at age four and half (night time). Father is mentally ill.

If it is any consolation, my mother potty trained my brother and he could not talk to tell her. He is MR.

Some reference points -
My daughter just turned four on 3/15. She was very hard to train but we had to push it for preschool. We put her in training pants - not pull-ups- a month before school started. She had a lot of accidents but has moved to regular underwear recently - still has an accident now and then. My doctor said that 88% of girls are already nighttime trained at this point and that we need to push her. UGH! Some kids deal well with slow changes - my kids respond to the "cold-turkey" method better.
Good luck!

You say she has speech problems but she understands everything surrounding her. She has autism by aby chance? Just curious cause my son was diagnosed with mild autism and he didnt get trained until just 2 months ago and he will be 4 in may. You have to be consistent, that all i did for my son to finally make that transition. Try to tell her she will get rewarded with a sticker or stamp everytime she got to the potty. Good luck!
