The Submarine Birthday Ball (this year is the 107th Annual) is a formal event, so as your date will be wearing either full dress or dinner dress uniform, you should dress appropriately; generally a full length dress or gown. If you do a search of Submarine Birthday Ball on Google Images, you can see some of the dresses that were worn in recent years. Have fun, it's a good time that has (or at least used to have) a lot of tradition.

It is usually a pretty formal event. You'll see everything from dressy pant suits to full length gowns. A Google image search for "Submarine Ball" has more pictures of dresses than a Yahoo image search does.

I would ask your date and if they do not have an answer on how formal the event will be, ask them to find out for you. You should be able to gauge your dress by the requirements that the sailors will be required to wear. My guess would be formal.
