I have the address of the person's parents from 20 years ago. Unfortunately, the person has a pretty common name. Any ideas?

classmates.com, as mentioned is a good idea.
Write to the address you have for the parents and ask the current people if they know where the parents went, they may have gone to a small town where they would be easier to find, or they may be in a known old-folks home or moved nearby. If you can go to the parent's house you can ask some of the older neighbors if they kept up with the family.
If you know what church the family went to, often they might know if there was a membership transfer, there is a chance that the children were married there, and if it is a female you are after you could get her married name. (You can also do a marriage licence check with the county). If you remember the names of the person's siblings, especially if they have an odd first name, you can search them up. If you know they were going into some profession that has a state registry (architects, nurses, etc.) you can check with that organization. If the parents died in the same town, their obituary will often say where the kids live "survivors include son Tim, of Smallville, Ohio..." or like that.
Of course if you can get the addresses of other classmates, someone else could know them.
