I got a question. I called my vet and he said she will be fine. But i was wondering if anyone knew for sure. cause im getting mixed opinons from family members. She went potty and hundereds of fire ant bites. I have to hose her down and pluck them off cause they were attached to her skin. her legs are now swollen. vet said give her a benidryl. They said it wouldnt affect the puppies. Would the posion for the ant bits or the meds hurt her puppies if allowed to nurse. babys are 4 weeks old.

You can take a pot of Hot Water and pour it into any ant mounds you find. You can even take a copper pipe hammer it into the mound and slow pour boiling water down in the mound. It will kill out the mound for a short time. Your vet was correct on the Benadryl. You can also use a cortisone spray or cream on her bites. You may even want to get her too stand in the bath tub for a while with warm water, Oatmeal Bubble bath and place some baking soda in the water and soak her legs if they look sore. Just stay away from any chemicals while she has her puppies. You can also mix Ivory soap and water to soak the mounds but the soap will kill grass., Take care of Mama

Fire ants inject a poison into their victims! I would definitely seek another opinion about this. I would think that a 4 week old pup would become very sick and possibly die from too many bites.
If possible get the dog inside somewhere until you can control the ant problem. I don't know to much about fire ants but from what I have been told they are nasty littler buggers.

Sounds like very good advice. I would get some liquid Benadryl into the mother ASAP to reduce swelling and make her comfortable. She will continue to nurse, although the Benadryl will make her drowsy. There will be no harm to the puppies from the ant bites or the Benadryl. If she has bites around her teets, she may refuse to let the puppies nurse.

I would call at least one or two more vets and ask for more advice.. that doesn't sound right to me. Maybe I'm wrong but it's better to be safe then sorry!
