I guess you are using a dvd with media already on it...insert an unused dvd- - message to teemacsee.....why is it unhelpful, if a disk is partially used, the pc will prompt you to insert a BLANK disk in the drive......It has happened to me in the past, so before you rubbish other peoples opinions think before you dismiss what could potentially be the answer....

Do you have two dvd drives or a cd drive and dvd writer drive If so check to make sure that you have the right one selected as a recorder .

If not try a different dvd disk you could have a faulty one.
Also make sure that you are using the correct dvd disks some writers only use dvd- others use dvd+ some will use either

either the media you've inserted is not blank or the media is not a DVD or the media may be dirty OR the DVD system has a minor glitch and you just need to reboot your computer.

Good question,I've had the same problem recently with both a CD-R and CD-RW, both with plenty of space remaining.
Deanally's answer it not a helpful answer.
I wait with interest for more answers to your question.
