“I almost mistake [my son] for the ghost of his father, an old lover who disappeared with the night’s shadows a long time ago” (Danticat 83).

Is the part where I did this:[my son] correct?

It's correct in terms of grammar; I have no idea if it's correct in terms of fact.

You use square brackets to replace an unclear or an omitted word. So if the sentence originally said 'I almost mistake him for the ghost' and 'he' refers to 'my son' then it's correct. However, I don't know the quote so I don't know whether the sentence does indeed refer to the speaker's son.

Danticat is verbalizing the likeness of her son to his father, a lover but not a husband or mate. He didn't stick around. Took his leave late one night, hasn't been back! Yes it's correct it's what she sees in her minds' eye and that's her way of emphasizing her son. The punctuation could have been different but it's her work!
