It depends on which class of aircraft carrier you are referring to, but the range would be 75 to 90. In addition, it usually has a complement of rotary aviation assets (helicopters), which are usually in the form of SH-60B Seahawk LAMPS III. The SH-60B performs anti-surface and submarine operations, as well as conducting SAR operations.
Fixed wing assets for aircraft carriers in the U.S. Navy consist of the following:
- F/A-18C Hornet; multi-mission, multi-role fighter; CAP/CAS, as well as anti-ship strike platform)
- F/A-18E Super Hornet; multi-mission, multi-role fighter; the replacement for the F-14s already phased out of active service, it performs the same function undertaken by the F/A-18C Hornet
- E/A-6B Prowler; Electronic Warfare platform, based on the airframe of the A-6E Intruder. It features a suite of sophisticated sensors, ECM, ECCM, and ESM systems. It is the primary EW aircraft for the carrier and provides stand-off jamming and counter-jamming protection for the carrier battlegrounp and its escorts
- F/A-18G Growler; Electronic Warfare platform, based on the airframe of the F/A-18E Super Hornet and the intended replacement for the ageing E/A-6B Prowler. While not as extensively equipped as the E/A-6B Prowler, it carries a significantly larger weapons payload and provides proactive EW strike and defensive capabilities.
- E-2C Hawkeye; AWACS (Airborne Warning And Control Station), the primary airborne radar sensor platform. Provides standoff long range radar detection capabilities. Originally envisioned to work in conjunction with the F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18C Hornet to defend the carrier battlegroup against long range Soviet naval bombers and its anti-ship missiles. The F-14 Tomcats, armed with long range Phoenix AAM can engage airborne threats from as far as 180NM away.

Big nuclear aircraft carriers like US Navy carriers:
Nimitz(and Eisenhower, Vinson) can hold about 80 aircrafts
Enterprise (CVN-65, not the old of the WW2) can hold about the same.
The Roosevelt class (that are considered as Nimitz 2 because are really similar, but more modern..) are of the same size of Nimitz class but I found that they hold about 55 airplanes(strange...meybe the 2 values are referred to different periods and different airplanes smaller and bigger...for example in the past there were the small A-4 while today airplanes are bigger....)
The French Navy(Marine Nationelle) aircraft carrier, Charles DeGaulle can hold about 40 airplanes.
Illustrious class of the Royal Navy can hod about 18 aircrafts(STO/VL)
Russian carrier Kutnezov can hold about 60 aircrafts.
The new Italian aircraft carrier(STO/VL) can hold about 20 aircrafts, well at the moment only 8 jump-jets and 12 helicopters because at the moment we have only 16 Harriers(8 are embarqued on Garibaldi), but in the future more JSF are coming.
Brazil bought some years ago the old french carrier Foch(class Clemanceau) that can hold about 35 aircrafts.

Everyone mentioned the cool movie, but there is also a more recent trilogy of books I can recommend. These are by John Birmingham and together are called the Axis of Time trilogy. The first is Weapon of Choice. Much cooler than the movie and might make a good set of movies as well. It is from slightly farther in the future than we are now. The carrier is the USS Hillary Clinton! He wrote this before she lost the primary to President Obama. The author writes about how she goes on to be the toughest war time president ever! This story has an entire carrier battle group going back in time and they are stuck there and have to make their peace with it. Lots of play about how some of them are opportunists and become rich either through inventions or finding well known musicians and becoming their manager.

The current "Nimitz" class of carriers have a compliment of up tot 90 aircraft onboard. The Nimitz replacement "Gerald Ford" class will hold a complement of at least 75 aircraft.
