For a native English speaker, I would say French is a lot easier to learn. Because of the Norman conquest in 1066, about 40-50% of words in English are of French origin, so there are MANY cognates. Consider:

un question
un dessert
danser "to dance"
la liberté

Etc, etc. Some of the grammar of French is difficult to grasp at first (especially gender), but a lot is fairly similar to many English constructions (and from what I know of Italian, which is closer to Spanish than French is, there are a lot of things that French does more simply than Italian!).
On the other hand, if you wanted to go on to learn other Romance languages, like Italian or Portuguese, Spanish might be more useful, as French is pretty different from the rest (I'd say the most divergent, excluding Romanian of course).

spanish is very easy if you listen well and take good notes
spanish word are easy to understand but there are some words that trick you
ex: nieto- grandson
sobrino-nephew
i got the mixed up the first time i saw them
but once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy grammar isn't that hard in spanish neither is spelling but the y in spanish is hard to say it's i griega<< that equals the english y
french isn't too hard, but that's a little more exotic if you live in texas which has a large hispanic population which only makes it better to learn spanish and will get you paid more
the only thing about french is that the accent is hard to grasp and the fact the some people think that the french talk with a loogey but other than that i don't think there is a reason not to learn french
think about where you would probably go on a vacation, if you go to paris learn french if you go to panama or argentina learn spanish
but if you go to brazil neither one will help you

Generally, I'd have to say Spanish is easier, if for no other reason than it's totally phonetic - everything is spelled just like it sounds. Every vowel is always pronounce exactly one way. In French, there are lots of different vowel nuances, so pronounciation becomes an issue as well. This is also the case in English, but you wouldn't notice it because it's your native language.

Anyway, geographically most of the western hemisphere speaks Spanish, so unless you have some other compelling reason to study French, I'd go for the Spanish classes.

French and Spanish are both romantic languages so they are actually pretty similar. I like the way French sounds better, but I took Spanish.

For a community English speaker, i'd say French is plenty greater straightforward to benefit. by way of Norman conquest in 1066, approximately 40-50% of words in English are of French commencing up, so there are a number of cognates. evaluate: un question un dessert danser "to leap" la liberté etc, etc. various the grammar of French is complicated to snatch in the beginning (especially gender), although plenty is truly very equivalent to many English homes (and from what I recognize of Italian, this is contained in the time of Spanish than French is, there are lots of concerns that French does greater with ease than Italian!). on the different hand, if youin case you wanted to go directly to benefit diverse Romance languages, like Italian or Portuguese, Spanish perchance greater helpful, as French is gorgeous diverse from the entertainment (i'd say between the main divergent, aside from Romanian needless to say).
