I'm a stay at home mom, and my husband doesn't make a huge amount of money. When you have only one income for your family, you have to know how to budget, and sacrifice some of the luxuries that you would have if you had more income. Don't buy all brand name items; sometimes the generic is just as good, even better. Using coupons helps, as well as buying in bulk (most products give you alot more merchandise for just a little bit more money, but not all).

You may think that you can't afford to stay home, when you actually can. If you factor in the cost of having a job (gas, parking, lunches, child care, work equipment, uniforms, etc.) vs. the cost of staying at home, you may find that it actually equals out or comes close to the same amount.

HI There. I am a WFHM and I love it! One year ago, I had a baby and returned back to my corporate job after 6 weeks. I was devastated to leave my baby with a stranger and knew I had to do something to be with her. Finally, after 9 months, I found part time work I can do from home and became a member of a team of LOCAL moms whose mission is to help other moms work from home. Everything I do is from my computer. I can put as much or little time in as I want. The company has provided me with my own website, training, and a constant support system from other moms. The best thing is, I can be home with my children all day and still make money! Please check out my website and call/e-mail me if you would like more info. There is no inventory, no parties, no RISK! No big investment! Good Luck!

One solution is to find a job that will let you have a different shift than your significant other. For example, my husband works from 5PM to 10PM. I could find a job that stops at around 4PM every day, or work a graveyard shift, in order to bring in extra money. That way, a parent is always at home, no matter what.

Another option is careful budgeting, and signing up for WIC programs to curb the costs of formula and other foods that you and your children may need. Also consider food stamps, if you are eligable for them.

Also, the weather is getting a bit warmer lately, so your electric bill may not be so bad. Keep the lights off in your house during the day, and keep a window or two cracked open to let in some air.

I was a stay-at-home Mom for 9 years. It was wonderful but hard at times, financially and emotionally. I was a budget Queen. We ate a lot of rice, my husband drove an old vehicle with no A/C, clipped coupons, never ate out, I breastfed (not for financial reasons, I really wanted to-but hey, it's FREE!, shopped for clothes at thrift stores, etc. Get rid of as many bills as you can-credit cards and the like. Sit down with pen and paper and see if it's possible.
If it doesn't work out, I will tell you that now, with 3 kids between 6 and 12, I have a 2-year college degree with 3.5 GPA and no one will hire me. I am self-employed because of this. Once your out of the workforce that long, people think you are braindead, I guess, even though mothers are AWESOME multi-taskers, accountants (the budgeting, remember), secretaries (you do everything for everybody in the family), etc, etc.
Good luck with your life and just remember your kids will know you love them even if you aren't with them 24 hours a day.

I think you have to ask yourself if you really need the second income or would it just make you able to buy more things. If you are struggling to pay the bills then I guess you would just have to take a job. If you want the second income so you can buy yourself a brand new car and fancy stuff that you don't need, then just stay at home and really stick to a budget. Don't buy your kids things they don't need.

I do daycare in my home. I have also had a part time job before. But that will take u away from the family some..if you like that ...i used this time to get away for myself...even though i was at work i could at least have conversations with adult people instead of kids and feel like a person again.

No.. There is no need for a second income if you learn to live in your means... Half of the people who are out there with second jobs live way above there means to keep up with the jones... Personally I would sacifise(sp?) everything to be home with my kids the ones I decided to raise....

If you have a quiet home office area, computer, etc. there are companies that outsource various jobs. Some are listed on Craigslist.com. They might not pay as much as you are used to but it's still a 2nd income & time with your kids.

I do not know if this would be an option for you, but you could do Passion Parties on the weekends and on some week nights. It is a great way to earn extra money and it is great extra money. I make 40% commision on ALL of my parties! I choose when I can work, not someone else. You can not beat it. E-mail me if you are interested. I have 3 children and this is great for me.
