Hi there I am a Veterinarian Tech and hope to help! It could absolutely be allergies. If your dog is liking her paws obsessively then I would say it wouldn't hurt to bring her into the vet. It wouldn't be an emergency type and it is perfectly fine for you to wait a few days for an appointment. However, if your cocker is licking her paws raw (or if there is significant fur loss) then your vet will most likely want to see her sooner. Your vet can prescribe an antihyst. if it is indeed allergies and it sure sounds like it to me! Good luck!!

You may need to see your vet. There are several problems that may be hallmarked by paw-licking---

- Allergies. Since this is a Cocker, I would suspect this first. Paw and face itching/licking is common in dogs that are allergic to something. Perhaps she can't tolerate an ingredient(s) in her food. Many dogs have problems with corn (which should never be in dog food) or some meat sources. Maybe she's allergic to a plant in your yard or to a cleaner in your home.

- It could be an obsessive/compulsive disorder.

- It could be a sign of pain. Dogs will often lick areas where they hurt (similar to you rubbing your leg when it's sore).

See your vet to rule out problems that may get worse if left untreated. Good luck!

She might be nervous or anxious about something. Did you change anything in her routine? My dog does this and his vet has diagnosed him as being OCD related to separation anxiety. He has gone so far as to lick one of his paws pretty raw.

I'd go see a vet if this continues to be a problem. Your dog might be distressed. Do you want her to be living an unhappy little doggy life?

My mini Schnauzer is 10 yrs. old. I discovered, when he was about 2 yrs. that he is allergic to wheat. He used to lick his paws. But now he's okay if no one gives him food with wheat in it. Lots and lots of dog food has wheat as the first ingredient. You might try avoiding wheat for about 3 weeks and see if that helps. I hope it's not nervousness that is making your dog do that. Good luck.

Cockers seem to do that with their paws. For some reason they don't like them messed with either. You might try spraying some of that bitter apple chew spray on your dogs paws to see if it will stop!

Sometimes My dogs lick their paws b/c they want their nails clipped, but sometimes they do lick for no reason like when their paws are wet.
