Before offering citations, let me say that I believe there are obviously some shared characteristics between SLA and first language acquisition, but the L2 = L1 Hypothesis itself has led to many misguided and harmful approaches to second language teaching, approaches which often ignore the vital role of the L1 in learning the L2. Thankfully, there is more research to disprove the theory than to support it, and most in the field now discount the hypothesis.

That said, if you want research (a singular, non-count noun, by the way) to support the theory, see:

Dulay & Burt (1972) (1973) (1977)

Research that criticizes the L2 = L1 Hypothesis:

Kellerman (1984)
Zobl (1980)
Abbott (1980)
Seliger (1988)

There are natural pathways by which people learn. That Western education has ignored these is nothing particularly new or interesting. SO, they got a "wake-up call" from people figuring out a simpler way to do it... When are they ever going to do that with Mathematics so that the US can catch up with the so called "third world?"
[This was my question after helping an 8th grader catch up with her "third world" 7th grade classmates in her Calculus 1 class]

With fluency in 3 languages (English, Koine Greek, and ASL) and background in several others, I am familiar with the concepts involved in learning multiple languages, but know that everyone learns languages, or anything else, differently. The "one size fits all" approach which is so common in the American education system impedes learning for many students and sometimes leaves them worse off than before.
