There are a lot of variables, but for an entry-level ChE with a bachelor's degree the range of $45,000 - $55,000 a year is about average. For a master's you can be looking at $60,000 - $70,000 without too much trouble. Where you go from there depends on the company, but usually if you've been working for 10 years you'll be making six figures.

The money is okay. Looking at it from the outside it seems a lot of money, but you have to go into it for the right reasons - not just the money!!! It can be long hours, and very stressful work. You have to have a real interest in it, and have the desire to further your own career. You can't sit back or you'll get left behind.
But if you have drive, ambition, and are clear-thinking and have a good eye for detail (and don't mind long hours for often very little reward - seriously, I know people who have good basic salaries but are worked like dogs for it) - go for it.
